Penguins in Education
Here are a few suggestions for class activities for students aged 6 10
Resources: a map of the world, a pin board and pins, some tape measures, some
scales, paper and pencils or crayons, plasticine, and some toy penguins
 | Ask everybody to put a pin on the map where they live and then to put a pin on the
map where they think penguins live.

 | Weigh each penguin separately and write down the weights. Weigh pairs of
penguins. Work out how much two, three or four penguins would weigh check the
answer by weighing.

 | Measure the height of the penguins, write down the height of each penguin.
|
 | Describe a penguin.
|
 | Draw a penguin.
|
 | Make a plasticine model of a penguin.
|
 | What sort of animals are penguins? (i.e. mammal, fish, bird etc.)
|
 | Think of three things all birds have in common.
|
 | Read a book with a penguin story (see books
section pages for kids books).
|
 | Separate the kids into groups.....the King group...the Emperor group...the Chinstrap
group, etc. After they have identified with their group and learnt about 4 or 5 things
about their own group, play a game like a spelling bee, only ask questions that are
relevant to their particular species.
