How are penguins exploited?Penguins are now all protected species and no exploitation by man is allowed. However, in the past penguins have been used for many purposes. The main way in which mankind used penguins was to herd them into large ovens and, after hitting them over the head, literally boil them down for their oil. The oil was used up to the 1930s mainly as a base for ladies cosmetics although it has also been used as lamp oil. Today, the only way in which man uses penguins is in zoos and aquaria where they are kept on display so that people can learn more about them and to inform the public about conservation issues. |
