Where does a penguin fit in the food chain? At the bottom of the chain are the phytoplankton that are eaten by the zooplankton which in turn are food for the krill which are eaten by penguins (as well as whales, seals, fish, etc.). Some penguins are then eaten by leopard seals and killer whales. The decaying bodies of top predators (including penguins) provide nutrients for the phytoplankton.
