What are young penguins called? There are no particular names for young penguins, they are usually simply called chicks. Once a chick has moulted for the first time it usually has a different plumage to that of an adult and is then called a juvenile, or sub-adult. In a few species specific names are given to different stages of development - for example in African penguins large chicks that gather together in creches are sometimes called wombles and freshly moulted juveniles are called blues.
