Organisations working with penguins

As well as the sites listed here you will find links to national antarctic research programmes on the Antarctica links page

SANCCOB

SANCCOB is a voluntary organisation based in South Africa that is responsiible for the rehabiliation of injured and oiled sea birds - SANCCOB is probably the foremost institution in cleaning oiled penguins having led the effort to rehabilitate 20,000 penguins following the Treasure oil-spill in 2000.

The Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust

The Yellow-eyed trust was formed in 1987 by a group of Dunedin conservationists with the aim of saving the penguin by restoring coastal forest and controlling predators. The penguin is the focus but the Trust’s efforts also benefit other native species of plant and animal. The Trust is based in Dunedin but manages land and penguin interests in the whole of mainland New Zealand.
In its first 10 years the Trust protected eight habitats, by providing fencing to protect the nests from wandering stock in some areas, and by purchasing three other areas and turning them into penguin reserves. You can join the trust on line (or simply make a donation) and so contribute to this important work.

Phillip Island Nature Reserve

Phillip Island as well as being a tourist attraction is a very important Nature reserve carrying out a lot of vital research into the Little penguin.

Avian Demography Unit (ADU)

The ADU carries out and co-ordinates a great deal of research into the demographics of the African penguin.
