Rating 5 penguin
Penguin Species Gentoo and African
Number of Birds About 50 Africans - (including the only captive Albino penguin) and 5 Gentoos
Description of Exhibit The exhibit has a central salt water pool with crystal clear filtered water.  The pool is about 15m across, by 10 m wide and varies in depth from about 3 metres to nothing at the beach.  The pool is equipped with a wave machine to simulate the motion of the sea breaking over a beach.

Behind the beach there is a grassy area with plenty of burrows for the African penguins and a pebbled area for the gentoos.

Viewing is from a board walk overlooking the beach and pool, and from a transparent tunnel that runs right under the pool providing views of penguins "flying" overhead.  There is also a large glass side to the pool in the underground area. Educational information is displayed all along the boardwalk and inside a specialist cabin.

How to get there Bristol Zoo is in Clifton. Although there is a regular bus service to the Zoo from the City centre, it is easier to walk, take a taxi, or drive to the zoo.  Bristol is our local zoo, if any penguin lovers are coming specially to see the exhibit let us know (email) and we'll try to meet you.
